Three reasons why EVERYONE should listen to the Wolfsong trilogy

by Mary

Do you like stories? Do you like history? Adventure? We thought so...

Good news for you then! The third book in the wonderful Wolfsong trilogy by Saviour Pirotta publishes today, and all three are available in audio exclusively on the Cloudaloud app!

Nostalgic for the Neolithic

Fabulous writing

We at Cloudaloud would never recommend a book that we didn’t think was worth its salt. And we think all three of the Wolfsong books are worth tons and tons of salt!

As a lover of all things old – Neolithic tombs??? Be still, my beating heart! – I am predisposed to enjoy any tale of ancient people and places, but Pirotta has created something truly magical in these books.

The trilogy is set towards the end of the Stone Age, several thousand years ago. We begin in The Stolen Spear in what is now called Orkney, way up in the Northern Isles of Scotland. In the second installation, The Whispering Stones, main character Wolf and his gang travel down to Stonehenge in the southwest of England. Then, in the third story, The Mysterious Island, Wolf’s quest takes him all the way to sunny mainland Europe, through France, Italy, and Malta.

Saviour Pirotta in magical Malta

Pirotta is from Malta, a tiny island country in the Mediterranean sea with many amazing ancient sites, so he definitely knows a thing or two about old stuff! Saviour’s characters are just like you and me. Although they live in the Stone Age, they feel the same things that we do in 2021: pressure from your parents to find a good job, the anxiety of figuring out your place in the world, and the joys of friendship. They just don’t have tellies or central heating. Poor them!

Equally fabulous acting

The reader of the Wolfsong books is Joe Jameson, to whom storytelling just comes naturally. Thanks to Joe, these books are jam-packed with all the fabulously fun and unique character voices you could possibly desire. These were remote recordings, meaning that Joe records in his lovely home studio while I listen in over Zoom for mistakes. This can make sessions trickier; it’s harder to communicate when you can’t see someone face-to-face, and you are also reliant on a strong internet connection. That being said, the wonderous writing of these tales along with Joe’s fabulous storytelling ability made this process a breeze.

Valid historical records

These delightful books are stuffed with historically accurate detail (facts!!!) without the usual – rather clinical – delivery. Pirotta has done plenty of thorough research into the way our Stone Age ancestors lived. We reckon it’s much easier to absorb this kind of knowledge when it’s hidden in an exciting adventure story, like broccoli in a pasta sauce. Here are some delicious prehistoric titbits you can expect to gobble right up in the Wolfsong trilogy:

Burial mounds!

Sacrifices and shamanic rituals!

Boat building, sailing, and navigation!

Stone Age food and clothing!

Spiritual beliefs!

Painting techniques!

Medicine and healing!

Once you’ve listened to the Wolfsong trilogy it’s highly likely you’ll be raring to get out and see some cool, big, old stuff. The good news? We’ve got plenty right here on our doorstep! Stonehenge is the most famous, but here are some less commonly known destinations (note: lots of stones...):
